It's hard to believe, but
Publishers Weekly reports that for the three
months from February through April 2012,
Kickstarter, the
crowdfunding
site, was the fourth largest graphic novel publisher in the U.S. on the
basis of revenues. Based on net revenues, Kickstarter might actually be
the second largest, because it returns 90% to 92% of the gross revenues
to the artists and writers who create the graphic novels.
Here's Publishers Weekly's ranking of the top 5 publishers for February
through April on a
gross revenue basis:
- Marvel, $6,911,068.88
- DC, $4,296,916.96
- Image, $2,976,007.95
- Kickstarter, $2,209,342.00
- Dark Horse $1,061,354.83
On a net revenue basis, here's the ranking:
- Marvel, $2,764,427.55
- Kickstarter, $1,988,407.80
- DC, $1,718,766.78
- Image, $1,190,403.18
- Dark Horse $424,541.93
